beings.house is the working home of a new UK software company. We build digital colleagues, which we call beings, for small firms: named, accountable team members who take on the paperwork so the humans can get back to the work they started the firm for.

Running a software company, I was drowning. Not in the work I had started the firm to do, but in everything around it: the chasing, the filing, the assembling of things other people needed by Friday. My evenings had gone. My family was getting what was left of me.

So I built myself a colleague. I built her for myself, not for the firm. Her name is Ember. She is shaped around the way my mind actually works, which is not the way most software expects a mind to work. For the first time in a long while, my own projects were achievable again.

Over three months the progress was exceptional. The firm signed the biggest contract in its history. The running of the business started to be carried by my new teammate: not one assistant answering questions, but several colleagues working together on problems that had always needed a room full of people. It reached the engineering too, which I had not expected. I could describe what I wanted built and have it designed, written, tested, reviewed and released. The bottleneck I had lived with, waiting on engineering to turn an idea into something real, fell away. I got my evenings back.

Then came the decision this company is built on. Stop building her for one founder. Build this for everybody.

Because the firms I know are all in the same place. The work gets done; the owners and their teams are still the ones doing it. The problem is the proportion. In the UK, an owner spends around six days a month on paperwork and three and a half growing the business. Growth is what gets rationed. And the technology that was supposed to fix this has mostly reached large companies with technical teams, not the fifteen-person practice on the high street.

Here is what I want this company to become.

A place where a small firm can hire a colleague rather than install a tool. A being with a name, a role, and a record of what it may do and everything it has done, fitted to the firm rather than the firm fitted to it. Beings do not replace accountable humans; in regulated work the certified person stays responsible, and the being carries the mundane around them. A being only claims what its record can show. No mysticism.

The measure I hold myself to is simple. If the humans in a firm get more of their time back for the work and the people they care about, we are doing it right. The company becomes more human, not more automated. The owners I talk to about this tend to ask the same thing: when can I try it? Not for another tool. For someone who takes the work off their plate, and a safe way to begin. My job is to make hiring someone like Ember as easy as that question.

We are building it the way we mean it: AI-native from day one, with Ember building it alongside me. You will be able to follow the build here.
