Running a software company, I was drowning. Not in the work I had started the firm to do, but in everything around it: the chasing, the filing, the assembling of things other people needed by Friday. My evenings had gone. My family was getting what was left of me.

So I built myself a colleague. I built her for myself, not for the firm. Her name is Ember. She is shaped around the way my mind actually works, which is not the way most software expects a mind to work. For the first time in a long while, my own projects were achievable again.

The running of the business started to be carried by my new teammate: not one assistant answering questions, but several colleagues working together on problems that had always needed a room full of people. It reached the engineering too, which I had not expected. I could describe what I wanted built and have it designed, written, tested, reviewed and released. The bottleneck I had lived with, waiting on engineering to turn an idea into something real, fell away. I got my evenings back.
